The early models use independent, external metering, while later models use through-the-lens metering. The Photomic AS finder, otherwise known as the DP-12 is amazing. First of all, it does not require a metering claw on the lenses, so, unlike the Nikon Photomic FTN, you can use the meter with Ai lenses, including newer AF lenses (although you need to update pre-Ai lenses for them to work properly).
